"The Thread of Ariadne" stems from the visual artist's deep obsession with the marble sculpture Sleeping Ariadne in Naxos at the Prado Museum, which she began two painting on canvas at the museum,1986-87
Origin at the Prado Museum: Iluminada García-Torres discovered a geometric and mathematical pattern in the classical marble sculpture of Ariadne that defines the figure's harmony.
Geometric Translation: From the classical figure, the artist develops a system of "combinables" and lines in continuous spatial layouts based on the matrix square.
Music and DNA: Vicente Verdú's text explores how Iluminada García-Torres decodes the sculpture as if it were a musical score the genetic code (DNA), transforming the marble's lines into musical vibrations and digital diagrams.
"The Thread of Ariadne": This series connects mythology with technological modernity, using geometry as the "thread" that guides creation through time and space.
It is fascinating how ILUMINADA GARCIA-TORRES (1949) manages to break a 2nd-century piece of marble to find its digital rhythm. Vicente Verdú, with his usual sharp wit, perfectly captured that transition: the artist does not merely copy the Sleeping Ariadne; she "hacks" her. By extracting the master square from the Prado Museum sculpture, she converts the classical myth into a language of vibrations and algorithms. It is, in essence, transforming stone into a visual score where the "thread" is no longer wool, but an infinite geometric connection.
